On Veterans Day, November 11, 2001, American Legion James Ely Miller Post 833, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10870 and the Town of Smithtown dedicated the Veterans Plaza to honor the community's veterans.

The plaza features a "Walk of Honor" consisting of engraved bricks, which can be purchased to honor current and former service members, loved ones, and veterans from all conflicts.

The dedication took place just two months after the September 11th attacks. This timing added a special layer of poignancy, as the event honored both traditional military veterans and, by extension, the heroism displayed by first responders during the attacks.

The plaza's monument serves as the centerpiece for the Walk of Honor and other commemorative activities.
